Spain and Portugal dominate the market thanks to their ideal climate conditions and centuries-old expertise in cork harvesting and processing. France and Germany import raw cork primarily for industrial applications, including wine production, construction materials, and specialized manufacturing.

These deficits underline the reliance of industrial economies on imported raw cork to feed their value-added production chains.

CURIOSITY CORNER: THE SECRET LIFE OF CORK

Cork is one of the most sustainable materials on the planet and its harvesting process is surprisingly gentle. Unlike most raw materials, cork is collected without cutting down the tree. The bark is carefully stripped every 9–12 years, allowing the tree to regenerate naturally.
