International Days

International Dance Day

April 29 marks International Dance Day, the perfect occasion to put on your dancing shoes and hit the floor! Dance is a universal language, deeply embedded in cultures across the globe. Whether we’re moving to the rhythm ourselves or admiring the skill of professional performers, dance has a unique way of bringing people together. It’s energetic, expressive, and awe-inspiring. Today, let’s celebrate the art of dance as a global community.

History of International Dance Day

International Dance Day was established in 1982 by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI) to celebrate the global diversity and talent of dancers. April 29 was chosen to honor Jean-Georges Noverre (1727–1810), the founder of modern ballet.

The goal of this day is to promote dance worldwide, raise awareness of its cultural and artistic value, and encourage government support for the dance community. More than just a celebration, it’s an opportunity to appreciate dance in all its forms and share its joy with others.

Each year, the ITI selects a distinguished dancer or choreographer to deliver an official message for the occasion. Their website also provides details on annual gala events and global celebrations.

With dance dating back over 9,000 years, this holiday invites people of all ages and skill levels to explore different styles, appreciate the art form, and, most importantly, have fun moving to the rhythm.
